Very few people in the Caribbean are automatically known by their first name and Meiling Esau is the tour de force behind the premier fashion house, not only in Trinidad but throughout the Caribbean. Her designs are worn by international celebrities including Shala Monroque who was voted by as one of the top 25 most chic women of 2015.
The Meiling brand has been in existence for over three decades which have been stamped with accolades and awards including collaborations with Emmy Award-winning costume designer, Peter Minshall on his Carnival productions, the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta and the Miss Universe Pageant, which was held in Trinidad in 1999.

She was the first recipient of Caribbean Designer of the Year at Caribbean Fashion Week (CFW) and in 2008 she received another award from CFW, this time, “Grand Master of Fashion Design”.

In September of 2008, she was presented with the Chaconia Silver Medal, a national award given for the designer’s long and meritorious service to Trinidad and Tobago’s business sector.

In 2010, Meiling was one of only two designers in the English speaking Caribbean to be invited to show at Plataforma K in Colombia. This is the most prestigious fashion trade show in the South American region and in 2011, she was the only one invited back to represent the English Speaking Caribbean.

In 2011, Meiling was honoured with the Women of Influence Award from the Association of Female Executives of Trinidad & Tobago for her innovation and business acumen.

In 2012, Meiling received, the Ocean Style Award last week “in recognition of tremendous effort, great accomplishments and lasting impact on Caribbean Fashion”.

For the 50th anniversary of Independence of Trinidad and Tobago, she is considered one of the top ten of the 50 most influential people in the nation according to the Guardian Newspaper’s online survey.

In 2013, Meiling was invited as one of the top five global designers to participate in the Woman of Purpose Global Summit. This event was attended by some of the most powerful women in North America and Meiling was asked to address them in a round table forum.

Meiling can truly lay claim to the description as an ‘iconic designer’. In 2013, she is the only local designer (and one of only two women) to receive the National Icon Award of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

MFHB introduces new faces of Barbados Fashion Runways (part 1)



Shanice Prince is 22 years old an intelligent and determined young lady currently employed as a laboratory technician. She recently obtained a BSc. Chemistry from the University of the West Indies and besides being part of the fashion industry her desire is to pursue a career in Medicinal Chemistry.




Kira de Reus is a 14 year old secondary school student. From an early age she developed her sense of self, headlining in her school pantomime and performed a total of 22 shows over a 4 week period at age 10. Her current passions are doing hair, makeup and nails, her services and that of her business partner are much in demand among their peers. She has done a few print advertisements in the Caribbean.



Anna de Reus is a 13 year old secondary school student. She is also a student of the violin. She has a great love for animals and has volunteered many hours of service at the RSPCA Barbados. She has made several appearances in school pantomimes since the age of seven and has performed in violin shows for the past 6 years. Anna has done local and regional ad print campaigns.



Ashley Nash is a 15 year old student at Combermere School. She plans to pursue a career in fashion design, modelling, and also has a keen interest in forensic science. At Primary School she played the violin, guitar and piano, and was also encouraged to show off her vocal talent.


During her time at Combermere School, she has represented the school in many clubs and organisations including: Hockey, Art, Earth Helpers, Track and Field, Cadets, Drama and the former Agriculture Club


Her Fashion & Runway inspiration was Tyra Banks so by 11 she begun learning to sew and sketch her own designs. Her goal is to have her own fashion line by the age



Thea Semple is 17 and currently pursuing her Bachelors in nursing at the Barbados Community College. After placing 1st runner up in her first pageant Miss Springer 2014, she developed a love for “The Runway” she went on to compete in Miss Teen Barbados 2015 where she placed second runner up where love for everything fashion grew. MFHB ’15 was her first official Runway Show and having taken so naturally to this first experience we know she is destined for “big things!”

MFHB 2016

Music Fashion Hair Barbados (MFHB) extends heart felt thanks for those who and attended and supported our vision of creating the first Music Fashion Hair Barbados ​​event in Barbados at Spago Restaurant, Sugar Hill, St. James with the industry’s leading Caribbean and international professionals in music, fashion and hair. The event was a huge success.

MFHB ’16 is again set to be the ultimate fashion experience featuring some of the popular names from the Caribbean, US, and UK showcasing their music, fashion collections and hairstyles exclusively for MFHB.

MFHB ’16 will reveal the latest talked-about seasonal trends and indispensable style tips. As this is Barbados’ 50th year of Independence we will be celebrating with a special prize which will include a trip overseas to help the winner see what’s going on internationally in their industry!

Designer RYKII DE JUDE added to MFHB Runway show


RYKII DE JUDE is an award-winning fashion and design brand based in Barbados. It was established and incorporated in 2005 with Rykardo de Jude functioning as lead designer and Managing Director. By 2012, the company took a decision to focus on men’s wear and ladies and gentlemen’s corporate wear/uniforms. In this same year, the brand PNEUANER (pronounced NEW ANER) was born. Dedicated to clothing men in regal attire, the PNUEANER brand utilises some of the best fabrics – including luxury fabrics – available. The signature fabric of this brand is the West Indian Sea Island cotton, which is designed in heaven, grown in Barbados and milled in Italy.

Rykii de Jude has showcased his brands at Dominicana Moda 2013 and 2012, Haiti Fashion Week 2012, Miami Fashion Week 2008, the Urban Music Awards in the UK in 2006 and Barbados Fashion Week 2005, where it was awarded the “Invincible Rising Star award”. He has also showcased at other events and has received numerous awards for his work.

In 2014, the brand debut at Plitz NY fashion Week and returned in 2015, bringing along another Barbadian designer and one female model.

Thursday 19th saw the launch of the first annual Music Fashion Hair Barbados Launch. Celebrity Chef Orlando served up a feast, while local performer TC opened the event with a live music music performance.
